Finding somewhere for a dog to burn off energy is usually pretty simple when the weather behaves. But this is Britain, so relying on the weather is always a bit of a gamble.
Rain, mud, dark evenings and very hot days can all make the usual dog walk less appealing. And for owners of nervous, reactive, older or younger dogs, a busy park or walking route is not always the best option anyway.
That is where Chilli’s Dog Zone comes in.
Based in Daventry, Northamptonshire, Chilli’s Dog Zone is the first and only indoor dog soft play centre and boutique in the area. It gives dogs a private indoor space where they can play, explore, exercise and have a bit of fun without owners having to worry about rain, mud or who might suddenly appear around the corner.
The business is run by Louise, an accredited dog trainer and mum of two, and it was inspired by her family’s Golden Retriever, Chilli. Louise wanted to create the sort of place she had often wished existed herself, somewhere Chilli could get proper exercise indoors while the children could come along too.
The result is a dog friendly space built around real family life rather than what somebody thinks dog ownership should look like on a perfectly sunny day.
1. Dogs get their own private indoor play space
One of the biggest reasons to visit Chilli’s Dog Zone is that the indoor play room can be booked privately.

That makes a huge difference for dogs that do not necessarily enjoy sharing their space with lots of unfamiliar dogs.
A reactive dog might be perfectly happy climbing, sniffing and playing when there is nobody else around. A nervous dog might need a little more time to explore. An older dog might want to move at its own pace. And a young dog may simply have so much energy that giving it somewhere safe to charge around sounds pretty appealing.
The private setup means owners know exactly who is going to be in the room during their slot. There is no unexpected dog rushing over and no need to spend half the visit watching the doorway.
The room includes agility equipment, fresh water and plenty to keep dogs interested. There is even a ball pit, which has already proved popular with four legged visitors.

One customer, Sarah, said her dogs loved exploring the soft play area, with Cookie Dough particularly enjoying the ball pit.
Bookings at Chilli’s Dog Zone can include up to two dogs as standard, with additional dogs available at a small extra cost up to a maximum of seven. So it can work just as well for one dog having some solo fun as it can for a small group of dogs that already know each other.
And because everything happens indoors, there is no need to keep one eye on the rain clouds.
2. It was created by someone who understands dogs and family life
Chilli’s Dog Zone did not come about because somebody spotted an empty unit and decided dogs might look funny going down a slide.
There is a genuine reason behind it.
Louise has worked with dogs and their families for years and is an accredited dog trainer. She is also a mum of two young children and knows what it is like trying to keep everybody happy when the weather is awful and the dog still needs exercise.
The idea grew from those days when a muddy field did not exactly sound inviting. Louise wanted somewhere she could take Chilli to exercise without then facing the traditional post walk routine of wet towels, muddy paws and a dog that somehow manages to shake water over every nearby wall.

She also wanted somewhere where children could come along rather than dog exercise having to become another job to fit around family life.
That is reflected in the setup at Chilli’s Dog Zone. Families are welcome and there are small tables and chairs in the play room. Children can stay involved while dogs enjoy their session, although there are sensible rules in place around the soft play equipment to keep everyone safe.
Customer Megan summed up the appeal nicely after visiting on a day that was too hot for a normal walk. She praised how clean the centre was and liked that the children could come along while the dog burned off some energy.
It feels like a space created by somebody who actually deals with the everyday realities of owning a dog.
3. There is more to it than simply somewhere to play
The indoor soft play space might be the thing that first catches the eye, but Chilli’s Dog Zone has been designed to offer more than a quick run around.
Louise also offers dog training, while birthday paw ties give owners the chance to turn a dog’s special day into something slightly more memorable than handing over an extra biscuit at breakfast.

There is also a boutique filled with products chosen by Louise herself.
The thinking behind the shop is quite simple. Products are selected with force free training, natural choices and eco friendly options in mind. Louise has also made an effort to stock bright, interesting products that owners may not find in the usual big name pet shops.
Many of the items help support other small businesses too, which gives the boutique a much more independent feel.
It means a visit to Chilli’s Dog Zone can involve a training session, some private play time and a browse around the shop, rather than simply turning up for half an hour and heading straight home.
That wider approach fits with what Louise wanted the business to become. It is somewhere dogs and their people can feel comfortable, whether they are visiting to play, learn, celebrate or pick up something new.

And crucially, it is designed to work for different kinds of dogs rather than expecting every dog to enjoy exactly the same thing.
For dog owners around Daventry and Northamptonshire, Chilli’s Dog Zone offers something genuinely useful.
Dogs can exercise indoors without battling the weather. Private sessions make the space suitable for dogs that need a little more peace and quiet. Families can come along together. And everything has been shaped by Louise’s experience as both a dog trainer and dog owner.
There is also the rather nice detail that the whole business is named after Chilli, the family Golden Retriever who helped inspire it in the first place and apparently takes her role as chief treat tester very seriously.
